Megan Alfa is a social worker by profession and a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
She worked in the Family Court of Australia for 14 years, before leaving in 2006 to establish a private practice, Mediate Right Now (www.mediaterightnow.com).
During her time in the Court, Megan worked as a Family Consultant for 12 years, where she conciliated with parents to assist them to resolve parenting matters.
Megan was also trained in mediation by the Family Court and is an accredited Family Court Mediator. She worked for several years in the Mediation Unit at Sydney Registry in the late 1990's.
As with conciliation counselling, Megan has years of direct mediation experience.
In 2006, Megan was accredited by the Federal Attorney General's Department as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner in Family Law parenting issues. Since that time, Megan has been providing Family Dispute Resolution to parents in her private practice.
Megan has vast experience in dealing with Family Law parenting issues and the impact of parental separation and conflict on children.
Megan approaches Family Dispute Resolution from the perspective that children, rather than their parents, are her clients, and that parents are meeting with her to represent their children's best interests. Further, Megan considers that parents usually possess an expertise about their children, which she tries to broaden by speaking with them about other possible relevant factors for their consideration, given their children's ages and developmental stages and their family's particular circumstances.
Megan also offers an opinion to parents about appropriate outcomes for their children. The welfare of the children remains paramount in Megan's work with parents.
Megan has conducted parents' groups, assisting parents to deal with post separation parenting issues.
Megan has also trained in Interdisciplinary Collaborative Practice in Family Law.
Immediately prior to joining the Family Court, Megan worked with individuals, couples and families as a generalist social worker on a child and family mental health team.
